A structural comparison of halloysite nanotubes of different origin by Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) and Electric Birefringence

The structure of halloysite nanotubes (Hal) from different mines was investigated by Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) and Electric Birefringence (EBR) experiments. The analysis of the SANS curves allowed us to correlate the sizes and polydispersity and the specific surfaces (obtained by a Porod analysis of the SANS data) of the nanotubes with their specific geological setting. Contrast matching measurements were performed on patch Hal (from Western Australia) in order to determine their experimental scattering length density for a more precise analysis. International audience; The aim of this study was to investigate the action mechanism of linoleic acid hydroperoxides (HPOD), which are the major substrates of hydroperoxide lyase for the production of flavour compounds, on the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica by evaluating their effect on the oxidative state of the cells. The total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and the activity of the main antioxidant enzymes, such as glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase, of cells treated with HPOD were studied. Abstract This study is an attempt to unravel the tectono-metamorphic history of high-grade metamorphic rocks in the Eastern Erzgebirge region. Metamorphism has strongly disturbed the primary petrological genetic characteristics of the rocks. We compare geological, geochemical, and petrological data, and zircon populations as well as isotope and geochronological data for the major gneiss units of the Eastern Erzgebirge; (1) coarse- to medium-grained “Inner Grey Gneiss”, (2) fine-grained “Outer Grey Gneiss”, and (3) “Red Gneiss”. Effects of redox treatments on the structural composition of a ceria–zirconia oxide for application in the three-way catalysis

Abstract The influence of calcination and redox cycles on the structural modification and redox properties of a ceria–zirconia mixed oxide of nominal composition Ce 0.6 Zr 0.4 O 2 were investigated by XRD and Rietveld refinement, by BET measurement, TPR and OSC analyses. The material is characterized by high total OSC and retains this property after several redox and calcination cycles up to 1273 K, despite the loss of porosity and the decrease of surface area. Synthesis and characterization of praseodymium-containing ZrSiO4 solid solutions from gels

Abstract The preparation and characterization of a series of praseodymium–zircon solid solution (Prx–ZrSiO4) materials with increasing nominal amounts of Pr is reported. Pr-doped zircon gels were prepared by gelling mixtures of zirconium n-propoxide, praseodymium acetylacetonate and tetraethylorthosilicate, and annealed over the range of temperature up to the formation of Pr–zircon solid solutions. Influence of the preparation method on the activity of ceria zirconia mixed oxides for naphthalene total oxidation

Cerium/zirconium mixed oxides, with different Ce/Zr ratios, have been synthesised by a co-precipitation method using two different precipitating agents (sodium carbonate and urea) and tested for the total oxidation of naphthalene. Catalysts were characterized by N2 adsorption, XRD, Raman, TPR, XPS and DRIFTS. Ceria prepared by carbonate precipitation had low activity and this is likely to be related to the high concentration of residual surface carbonate that covers catalytic sites and inhibits reaction. International audience; GC-O using the detection frequency method gives a list of odor events (OEs) where each OE is described by a linear retention index (LRI) and by the aromatic descriptor given by a human assessor. The aim of the experimenter is to gather OEs in a total olfactogram on which he tries to delimit odorant areas (OAs), then to compute each detection frequency. This paper proposes a computerized mathematical method based on kernel density estimation that makes up the total olfactogram as continuous and differentiable function from the OEs LRI only. Lead isotope ratios of galena from the carbonate-hosted massive sulphide deposits of Kabwe (Pb-Zn) and Tsumeb (Pb-Zn-Cu) in Zambia and Namibia, respectively, have been measured and found to be homogeneous and characteristic of upper crustal source rocks. Kabwe galena has average isotope ratios of 206/204Pb = 17.997 ± 0.007, 207/204Pb = 15.713 ± 0.010 and 208/204Pb = 38.410 ± 0.033. Tsumeb galena has slightly higher 206/204Pb (18.112 ± 0.035) and slightly lower 207/204Pb (15.674 ± 0.016) and 208/204Pb (38.276 ± 0.073) ratios than Kabwe galena. Magma-derived gas influx and water-rock interactions in the volcanic aquifer of Mt. Vesuvius, Italy

We report in this paper a systematic investigation of the chemical and isotopic composition of groundwaters flowing in the volcanic aquifer of Mt. Vesuvius during its current phase of dormancy, including the first data on dissolved helium isotope composition and tritium content. The relevant results on dissolved He and C presented in this paper reveal that an extensive interaction between rising magmatic volatiles and groundwaters currently takes place at Vesuvius.Vesuvius groundwaters are dilute (mean TDS ∼ 2800 mg/L) hypothermal fluids ( mean T = 17.7°C) with a prevalent alkaline-bicarbonate composition. Isotope geochemistry of Pantelleria volcanic fluids, Sicily Channel rift: a mantle volatile end-member for volcanism in southern Europe

Chemical and isotopic ratio (He, C, H and O) analysis of hydrothermal manifestations on Pantelleria island, the southernmost active volcano in Italy, provides us with the first data upon mantle degassing through the Sicily Channel rift zone, south of the African–European collision plate boundary. We find that Pantelleria fluids contain a CO2–He-rich gas component of mantle magmatic derivation which, at shallow depth, variably interacts with a main thermal (∼100°C) aquifer of mixed marine–meteoric water.
